Teen with Cancer Models to Show Nothing Can Take Away Your Beauty
17-year-old, Andrea Salazar was a typical high school student who loved to model as a hobby. That is until a cancerous lump was discovered in her neck this past February. Salazar says she had no side effects and would not have known anything was wrong if she hadn’t discovered the mass. Doctors diagnosed the teen with stage 2 nodular sclerosis Hodgkin Lymphoma, which Salazar says suddenly changed her life. She had to spend a great deal of time in the hospital and had to undergo chemotherapy treatments that made her lose her hair.
“Before chemotherapy I had always been a confident person,” Andrea told Buzzfeed. “So when my hair started to fall out I would look in the mirror and I wouldn’t feel that confident about myself.”

In an attempt to regain Salazar’s confidence, her mother reached out to modeling agencies and photographers and shared her daughter’s story and love for modeling. The response was overwhelmingly positive and resulted in a photoshoot with Gerado Garmendia. Garmendia says Andrea is the one who came up with the idea for a “princess without a wig” theme. Salazar remarked:
“I see all these little girls, and you can see it in their faces that they lose all confidence in themselves. I want them to know that your hair or your physical attributes doesn’t define who you are — what really matters is your inner beauty, the way you treat others, and if you’re a kind person, that shows through.”
She added: “It doesn’t matter whether you have hair or not, I don’t think that represents you as a person. … If you don’t have long legs, or blue eyes, or something that people think is perfect … that’s not beauty.”
Andrea’s powerful shoot truly demonstrates that nothing can take your beauty away, and that nothing is more beautiful than a great personality and confidence.
