Meet the Designer Featuring Ev Bessar

Three words that describe Ev Bessar‘s Spring/Summer 2015 Collection: Edgy, Raw, and Original. TRUE Model Management sat down with designer Ev Bessar to get all of the details on how the designer got started, what inspires her, and more! The Ev Bessar line is alluring and perfectly on point in melding high-end fashion with comfort, resulting in apparel you will love wearing.
TM: How did you get started?
EB: I remember one night, the electricity went out and there were no candles in the house. My mum made up a fairy tale to put me at ease and help me fall asleep. Since that night, I looked forward to the next power outage and more fairy tales. The experience sparked my imagination and I was exploding with ideas. I started to cut up my mum’s dresses and turned them into costumes for the characters she had invented in the tales – but, it goes with out saying that my enthusiasm and early work was not appreciated by my mum, haha.

TM: Where do you draw your inspiration from?
EB: Ev Bessar is a line inspired by:
- Molecular connections and various shapes in nature.
- Constellations of thread depicting an experience, idea, or thought.
- Freedom of judgments.
- Interactions and desires.

TM: Do you have a fashion icon?
EB: It would be very hard for me to name one role model that I am inspired by. There are many brilliant and creative names that come to mind that are changing the way we think and act. These same minds are responsible for triggering change, challenging fashion, opening minds, and crossing borders. I am fascinated and inspired by such designers.

TM: Is there a specific aesthetic that you keep in mind for all of your designs?
EB: Handcrafting, textures, air flow, and natural materials are important aesthetics in my designs. My line is an exploration of feelings, emotions, poems, and my surroundings. It is like a coloring book story – filled with a lot of air, music, and the love of nature. Certainly, my heritage, upbringing, and emotions are underlying influences throughout my clothing line. Each day provides new information that can be smelled, touched, felt, and interpreted, which becomes incorporated, sometimes subconsciously, in my line. The lack of color scheme in this line is used to enhance and emphasize the textures, structure of materials, and support of forms.

TM: What does fashion and design mean to you?
EB: To me, design is an expressive tool used to create art, but art can still have everyday relevance. It is my goal to combine both and create a line that stands out and is artistic, but still comfortable or wearable.

TM: What advice would you give someone trying to get started in designing fashion?
EB: I would advise creative minds to read, learn, feel, listen, and think. It is important to be devoted to your ideas, stay on your path, and don’t bend under the pressure of trends. Lastly, always look at yourself from the side and improve.

TM: You mentioned that charity is very important to you; can you elaborate on some of the exciting ways you are giving back and helping others?
EB: I donated one of the dresses I designed and showcased in the fashion show (see second image) to a charity to help prevent children sex trafficking. Also, this October we will be making Halloween masks with kids for donation to Haitian orphanages. There will be a short film posted October 3rd documenting the processes. There are a couple other exciting projects focused on charity that are currently in the works as well.
