LT: Can you tell us a little about your brand and background?
KL: Argentous Kim is a luxury brand focused on comfort, movement, and technology. Working as a fit model for activewear companies has really inspired me to integrate those fitting principles into my brand. I believe that apparel should be liberating and complement a modern lifestyle. My garments are extremely versatile and can be worn anytime anywhere.
LT: What inspired you to get into fashion design?
KL: I started making clothes when I was very young. My grandmother was a sewer during the Great Depression, so I think her stories introduced me to that world.
LT: Are you self-taught or did you study fashion design?
KL: Both. I learned a lot through my innate curiosity of sewing, pattern making, and fit. I taught myself how to hand sew around the age of 5, and when I was 8 years old, my grandmother gave me her sewing machine. I then started sewing aprons for my mom, and purses I could bring to school. Eventually I started making garments for myself. In my earlier school days, I made my own patterns and designed clothes for myself that I couldn’t find in stores and that fit my lanky preteen frame.
Notably, during college, I studied abroad in Florence, Italy and that turned out to be a very meaningful experience. My favorite class was advance draping for jackets. I was enamored by Italian style and tailoring, and was introduced to the beauty of Italian leather. Lastly, I studied fashion design at Parsons, The New School for Design, learning couture techniques, Photoshop, Illustrator, and fashion industry standards.
LT: The fashion industry can be pretty intimidating. What advice do you have for someone who is considering a career in fashion, whether it is as a model or as a designer.
KL: You have to really believe in yourself! Never compare yourself to others because we are all on different paths. Confidence is key. Think objectively about your skills and abilities and properly position yourself in the industry. If you don’t get a call back after a go-see or job interview, it’s probably not personal. That company is just looking for a different fit. We all get many doors opened and shut in our careers so it’s important to persevere.
LT: What is one of your favorite pieces in the collection?
KL: I love the Women’s Leather Racer Jacket! I’m really excited about it because it combines so many elements I am passionate about. It is crafted with fine Italian leather, stretch silk, and moisture wicking high tech fabrics. It’s produced ethically in New York to the highest standards. It’s a combination of New York style, Italian style, and incorporates activewear details. You can’t find anything like it on the market. It’s really my dream jacket.
LT: What is your recommendation for balancing work and your personal life?
KL: I think it helps to blend it together. It’s really easy to work 24/7 in New York, so I make a conscious effort to make time to see my friends and to go to many fashion and cultural events in the city. It’s not a good idea to only focus on work, or likewise, be too distracted in this exciting city. I do yoga often to relieve stress.
LT: What do you think sets your brand apart?
KL: No other brand combines New York and Italian style, fine tailoring, activewear comfort, and high mobility in a luxury leather jacket. My apparel looks fabulous during the day, whether working or traveling, or out having dinner and drinks with friends in the evening, and anything in between! I’ve noticed that people, myself included, like the freedom of wearing activewear outside of the gym. My apparel provides the best attributes of activewear but in high fashion style.
LT: What is your favorite color, fabric, and/or print to work with?
KL: Not to be too cliche but my favorite color is black. It’s so powerful and elegant at the same time. My favorite fabrics are high tech fabrics because of their ability to make us feel and look more comfortable. Also, I love organic prints with curved shapes.
LT: How do you differentiate between style and fashion?
KL: Your style is timeless and innate. It reflects your environment, values, and personality. Fashion is more trendy and represents a certain time or lifestyle.
LT: How do you select the materials you use?
KL: I select the highest quality materials. My grandmother told me when I was young that I have “champagne taste.” My eye for quality is very instinctive. Additionally, I choose materials based on their end use. I think about how I want my garment to function in real life. Every element in a garment should have a purpose. Hence, I’m really looking forward to the advancements that are coming in high tech fabrics.
LT: What is one of your earliest and/or most significant entrepreneurial experiences?
KL: When I was in high school I always designed and modeled in our annual student fashion show. My senior year, I directed the show and presented a collection. Taking on those two responsibilities was a great learning experience and an opportunity to share my work with my school.
LT: Do you have a favorite quote or motto?
KL: No fear of flying! That was my high school’s gymnastics team’s motto, but I think it applies to anywhere in life.
LT: What is your favorite pastime?
KL: Sports! I love watching and participating in sports. I find athletes and athletic apparel to be inspiring. Gymnastics really shaped me.
LT: What is the best advice you have ever received?
KL: Just go for it!
LT: The fit of a garment is critical. What advice do you have for finding the perfect fit?
KL: Fit is one of the most important aspects of design for me. I first try on the garment and move around. The garment has to be comfortable when you move your arms, walk, and sit. Also, I think about demographics and lifestyle. Companies fit garments to their target customer, so try to shop with brands that make sense for you. Comfort is extremely important to me.
