5 Ways You Can Stand Up to Cancer
Today is National Stand Up to Cancer Day
National Stand Up to Cancer Day is the second Friday of each September. The idea behind this day is to honor those who have been affected by the disease and to raise money for cancer research. Whether we have personally experienced cancer, or know a family member, close friend, or co-worker who has, it is harder to find someone who hasn’t been affect by this disease, than it is to find someone who has.
According to the American Cancer Association, 1 in 3 women will suffer from some form of cancer in their life. With these kinds of odds, it is ever important to raise awareness, go for regular check ups and screenings, and to continue to raise money for cancer research. While some forms of cancer are widely publicized (for example breast and prostate cancer), it is important to keep in mind that there are many other types of cancer that could benefit tremendously from donations towards research.
If you’d like to get more involved there are a number of ways you can do so – and no act is too small! If you’re not sure where to start or what you can do here are 5 ways you can make a difference and raise awareness, starting today!
1. Donate Money
We all know cancer research is not cheap, so one great way to contribute is to donate to an organization that you are passionate about. As mentioned above, there are many different types of cancer and not all are well known or publicized, which means they are often in greater need of funding.
If you are looking for an organization to donate to – TRUE recommends that you consider Fred Hutchinson – Cancer Research Center.
2. Get Active
Looking for a way to stay fit while you raise money and awareness for a good cause? A sponsored run or athletic event is the perfect option for you. There is a number of walks, runs, and sports games that you can get involved in to support specific charities and causes, like cancer. Just be sure to do your research, so that you know how the donation process for the group you are fundraising for works. This is a great reason to get a group of friends or co-workers together and to have fun while supporting a cause you believe in!
3. Donate Your Time
Have some extra time on your hands? There are a number of hospitals and organizations that are always looking for volunteers, so check out places near you to see what matches you best. Another great option is to organize a charity raffle or event in your community that will not only raise awareness for cancer, but will raise money to help fund research. Contact local shops and restaurants to see if they would be willing to donate items for a charity raffle! It will be a great way to bring people together for a good cause.
4. Shop Smart
Do you ever stop to think about all of the products you are purchasing and what the companies that produce those products stand for? From groceries to the latest fashions – when we shop we are inevitably supporting a number of companies. However, we may not know much about those companies or what they believe in. Try to do some research and find products that come from companies that share values you care about. There are a number of fashion companies that donate to charities regularly! By purchasing goods from brands that give back, you are not only contributing to the companies’ success, but making a difference in the world.
5. Donate Your Hair
If you don’t have extra money to donate, but you have a head full of long locks, you can donate your strands to an organization that will use it to create wigs! There are a number of organizations that accept hair donations for wigs, with many of them creating them for adults and/or children with cancer. While a number of organizations prefer untreated hair – don’t get discouraged – there are a few that will accepted lightly colored and/or processed hair. Research the organizations to see which ones fit you and your hair type best!
