Set Back Your Skin Clock – Daylight Savings DIY Facial Exfoliator and Face Mask
It’s finally here: the day we set our clocks an hour back and – are forced to wake up an hour early. However, instead of lamenting about losing an hour of sleep, pull yourself out of bed and prepare yourself for an enlivening skin care treatment – a brightening, awakening face mask that will start your day off right.
The mask and the scrub are both 100% natural and made from organic ingredients and oils. The quality of the raw materials you use really makes a difference! The more natural and non-refined your products are, the more active compounds the botanicals possess. Non-refined, pure, and organic products are made with as little human intervention as possible – this means the highest quality of product is achieved, as no preservatives or dyes are added.
Natural products are safe to use on your skin. Derived from the earth itself, the products are compatible with our own cells and bring out qualities in the skin, which synthetic cosmetics are unable to do. In addition, natural ingredients rarely produce irritating reactions, unlike many products made in the lab. Therefore, it is always a good idea to moisturize and exfoliate your skin using natural ingredients. Bring out your inner beauty by exfoliating with a Brightening Face Scrub and follow with the Brightening Face Mask. This face mask/face scrub combination will get rid of any skin impurities and make your complexion bright, leaving your skin feeling soft. To learn how to clear your skin of gloominess, follow the steps below:
Brightening Face Scrub:
- 2 tbsp coconut oil
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil (or non-refine/pure olive oil)
- 1 tbsp demerara sugar
- fresh lemon zest
- 2 drops of lemon essential oil
Demerara sugar is a cane sugar with large grains. The large grains make the scrub perfect for a deep, abrasive scrub on the face to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. Olive oil serves as an excellent moisturizer that coats the skin, providing it with a thin film that will maintain moisture in the skin. Coconut oil is cleansing, as it removes all left-over makeup (stuck in the pores of the face) and has antiviral and antimicrobial properties. The oil is rich in Vitamin E, which is essential for skin health. Fresh lemon zest and lemon essential oil are brightening and promote absorption of the oils into the skin.
How to make the Brightening Face Scrub:
Add all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix until a homogeneous paste is formed. Put the fresh mixture directly onto the skin and rub in circular motions until the sugar crystals dissolve. If the sugar feels too abrasive on your skin, wet your hands prior to scooping the mixture. This will help the sugar crystals melt. If you have any left over, transfer the scrub into a glass container and store in the fridge. The glass container will allow you to preserve the scrub and the natural ingredients.
Brightening Face Mask:
- 2 tbsp honey
- 2 tbsp yogurt
- 1 tbsp lemon juice (or 4-5 drops of lemon essential oil)
- 2 tsp turmeric
Turmeric is anti-bacterial and thus promotes healing by keeping any bacterial species away from the skin. The powder improves the elasticity of the skin, preventing the formation of wrinkles. Through its anti-oxidant activity, turmeric has anti-cancer properties and prevents skin dryness. Honey is also packed full of antioxidants; the product is extremely moisturizing and soothes irritated skin. Honey causes the pores of the skin to expand, effectively pulling any oil buildup and excess debris out of the skin. Yogurt promotes new cell growth through it’s a-hydroxy acid activity – the compound dissolves dead skin cells, clarifying the skin and exposing a new fresh cell layer. This permits the skin to glow and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles.
How to make the Brightening Face Mask:
Add all of the ingredients into a bowl and mix until a homogeneous paste is formed. Put the fresh mixture directly onto the skin and leave on for 10 minutes. If you have any left over, transfer the mask into a glass container and store in the fridge. The glass container will allow you to preserve the mask and the natural ingredients.
After the 10 minutes has passed, wash the face mask off your face with warm water and pat dry with a soft towel. Top off with your favorite moisturizer.
In addition, the process of making the ingredients ensures no chemical processing. Chemical processing often implies procedures that change, or even destroy, the active compounds in the ingredients, which reduces their efficacy.
