#Curvy Banned on Instagram
If you search usable hash tags on Instagram you’ll find #curvy is not a viable option. While you can include banned hash tags, such as #curvy or #curvygirls, on your posts, the tags will not show up in searches and are basically rendered useless. Interestingly, Instagram recently lifted bans on more than 100 hash tags that were formerly unsearchable, including #sexyback. Apparently #Curvy did not make the list, but why?
Apparently, the reason behind the company’s band is an attempt to prevent the use of the hash tag by porn companies – however, a number of debatable hash tags can still be found. As Buzzfeed points out, #Skinny and #thin are searchable and provide warnings on eating disorders, but #obese and #fat are fair game and hash tags explicitly related to sex come with a warning. Therefore, it seems Instagram’s attempt to sensor hash tags is rather ineffective and arbitrary. Instagram’s speech standards are not consistent and seem to have strong political and societal influences.
The greater problem behind the banning of #Curvy is that the word is used to describe a body type that already receives harsh criticism within society and social media. The banning of this particular term seems to mirror a greater societal issue, the exclusion and unacceptance of curves.
